More than 16 hours after they were held hostage in a Sydney chocolate shop, dozens of individuals were freed following a police raid. Much of the major Australian city was shut down during the crisis , during which a black Islamic flag was hung in the retailer’s window. According to the Associated Press , a few of the captives were able to escape just prior to the police action that precipitated the end of the tense standoff and the identification of the radical Muslim believed to have been behind it.
