Barack Obama has long been criticized for weighing in on an issue without fully understanding it. In 2009, for instance, he asserted  that police “acted stupidly” in arresting a Harvard professor, a remark followed by his subsequent entanglement in heated cultural narratives including the shootings of Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown. Throughout the year, however, his commentary on the burgeoning threat of the terrorist group known as Islamic State has proven to be exceptionally misguided.
